| Q/. I just downloaded YourVirtualStore, what do I do? A/. Once the pre-requisites are verified as noted below the total install time for
YourVirtualStore should be 2 minutes or less.
Any ASP based cart will have the same requirements as YourVirtualStore. ASP (Active Server
Pages) is Microsoft's programming language for the web. It also runs on many
Unix platforms.
YourVirtualStore installation is extremely easy. Getting the environment correct in the
Windows world is the hard part unless you pick a web hosting company that has
done this for you.
Once the environment is set-up, YourVirtualStore is by far the most comprehensive e-commerce
solution you will find at any price.
Environment Check
Before your install YourVirtualStore, you need to know if it will run on you PC or web
hosting company. ASP is a combination of programming logic and HTML.
To use HTML pages you need a browser. ASP pages are the same. They need a browser.
ASP pages require one more thing. ASP needs the right server to interpret them.
YourVirtualStore can run both locally on your own PC or on your web hosting company. But
not on every PC and not on every web hosting company. The information below
related to getting YourVirtualStore running on your local PC. An ASP page ends in .asp
and an HTML page normally ends in .htm
YourVirtualStore can also run on your web host. Please see our help files on
web hosting at YourVirtualStore Hosting
The topics below relate to Windows.
Can you run YourVirtualStore on your own PC?
Maybe.
Although ASP is Microsoft's programming language for the Internet, and Windows
is Microsoft's operating system for your PC, Microsoft choose not to allow ASP
to run under all Windows systems..
Do you have any of the following?
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows NT
Windows 2K
Windows XP Professional
Then you can probably run ASP and therefore YourVirtualStore
Do you have any of the following?
Windows XP Home
Windows ME
Then you may not be able to run ASP and therefore cannot run our YourVirtualStore
software.
Microsoft has not put support into these two versions of Windows to display
ASP files. See YourVirtualStore and Windows ME
You can still play with YourVirtualStore if your web hosting company supports
ASP. See YourVirtualStore Hosting
Windows 95 and 98
If you are running Windows 95/98, YourVirtualStore needs Personal Web Server installed
on your PC. If you have not installed it, do so now. It is available free on
the Windows 98 CD or can be downloaded from the web for Windows 95.
Personal web Server (PWS) is a FREE Microsoft Windows component that is used
to interpret ASP pages. Personal Web Server is NOT FrontPage Server If you have
Personal Web Server running there will be a small icon on your task bar and
when you click it, up will pop Personal Web Manager.
If you do not have PWS, you first need to install it. See the section below
for installing PWS. PWS is located on the CDROM that came with Windows 98. For
Windows 96, it can only be downloaded from the web. See YourVirtualStore
and PWS
Follow the instructions on setting up PWS at YourVirtualStore
and PWS
Windows NT, W2K
On Windows NT, Windows 2000 you can have Personal Web Server or Microsoft Internet
Information Server (IIS). IIS comes with NT and Windows 2000 but may not be
installed automatically. If you have PWS see YourVirtualStore
and PWS
If you have IIS see YourVirtualStore and IIS
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Professional has Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). IIS
comes standard with XP Professional but may not be installed automatically.
You may need to install it and configure it. See YourVirtualStore
and XP
YourVirtualStore Installation on your PC
Once the pre-requisites above are met, the actual YourVirtualStore install should take
less than 5 minutes. The Steps are:
You will have received a zip file called yvs500.exe. Double Click on the executable
file to install 100+ files into a directory on your hard drive.
You have finished the install of YourVirtualStore
If you have configured your Personal Web Server or IIS as described above,
YourVirtualStore should immediately work. We recommend that you run our diagnostic
tool diag_dbtest.asp to test whether the database can be read and written.
Using a web hosting company
IF you use a web hosting company instead of running YourVirtualStore on your local PC,
the installation is even easier. You do not need worry about IIS or PWS since
this is already done for you by your web hosting company. Simply do the following:
Upload the YourVirtualStore files to you web host just like you do with any HTML files
Put the shopping Access database(shopping500_yvs.mdb )into the directory provided
or recommended by your web hosting company.
Update shop$config.asp to tell YourVirtualStore where you put the database. See data
base setup for examples.
YourVirtualStore is now installed on your web host
Things that can go wrong
Nothing happens or the ASP files try to download to my PC. This means you have
not configured PWS or IIS correctly. See Nothing Works
The database cannot be read or written. See YourVirtualStore
Database Set Up or YourVirtualStore Set Up

Can YourVirtualStore be used with Apple Macintosh?
Yes YourVirtualStore will work with Apple but the actual YourVirtualStore software
needs to be placed on a web host that supports ASP. See YourVirtualStore
Hosting. Unfortunately the MAC does not have either any interpreter for
ASP pages. This simply means you cannot run YourVirtualStore on your own private
MAC.
But after you upload YourVirtualStore files to your web hosting company you
can do everything. This includes shopping, administration and reports from your
browser running on your MAC. printable version Back to Main Page |
